Development Committee Charge & Committee Member Information
Disability Rights Washington (DRW) Mission:
To advance the dignity, equality, and self-determination of people with disabilities. We work to pursue justice on matters related to human and legal rights.
Development Committee Charge
- Raise funds to support DRW’s mission and work by planning, implementing and supporting philanthropy and fund development strategies.
- Raise awareness of DRW’s work and issues affecting people with disabilities.
Committee Structure
DRW’s Director of Strategic Partnerships leads the committee, which is comprised of up to 20 members from the DRW Board, staff, and community who serve for at least a one-year term. The Development Committee supports the work of the DRW Board.
Key Activities/Meetings/Events
- Orientation – 2 hours at start of term
- Committee Meetings – quarterly, for 1.5 – 2 hours
- Breaking Barriers annual event and others as planned
Time Commitment
Variable depending on individual support for each event/campaign
Expectations & Key Areas of Responsibility/Tasks
- Attend a minimum of 3 Development Committee meetings during the year.
- Provide input on development matters, including annual fundraising plans and fundraising policies and practices, and communications.
- Serve as a DRW ambassador, sharing information with networks, inviting guests to events, connecting to potential donors, and hosting events, if appropriate.
- Sign up to receive DRW’s communications and follow DRW social media.
- Help identify and connect DRW to prospective donors, businesses and foundations as appropriate.
- Acknowledge donors with thank you calls or notes or invitations to events.
- Engage the DRW Board by providing updates on Development Committee activities and information to support DRW’s fiscal health through philanthropy and fundraising.
- Provide support before, during and after events, most notably Breaking Barriers.
- Support DRW with a financial donation that is personally meaningful.
Qualifications of Committee Members; needs for 2021
- DRW is seeking committee members with diverse perspectives. People with disabilities, Black, indigenous, and people of color, formerly institutionalized or incarcerated, and those from other oppressed groups and all protected classes are strongly encouraged to apply.
- Additionally, DRW is seeking members who:
- Have strong connections to the business and/or legal sectors.
- Have strong connections to communities outside of King County.
- Identifies as a person with a disability.
- Development Committee members should be committed to advancing disability rights and/or disability justice principles.
Note: We will consider applicants beginning mid-March and will make determinations on a rolling basis.
