Jenn Henderson
Attorney
Jenn Henderson is a staff attorney with the Treatment Facilities Program. Jenn works with constituents to provide technical assistance, investigations, and representation. Jenn performs observation and monitoring in jails, hospitals, and treatment facilities throughout the state.
Jenn attended the University of Washington (UW) and earned a bachelor’s degree with a major in Law, Societies, & Justice. While at the UW, Jenn volunteered over 450 hours with the Kitsap County Office of Public Defense. Jenn also worked with Civil Survival, participated in mass legal assistance events, and advocated for reform of legal financial obligations. As part of their undergraduate degree, Jenn visited several prisons in Washington state, including Monroe Correctional Complex, the Washington Corrections Center, the Washington Corrections Center for Women, and Mission Creek Corrections Center for Women (MCCCW). Jenn also participated in a one-year monthly book club at the MCCCW. After completing their bachelor’s degree, Jenn attended the UW School of Law and earned a Juris Doctor. During their time at the UW School of Law, Jenn worked for a non-profit called Living with Conviction – an organization which employs, serves, and advocates for formerly incarcerated folks. In law school, Jenn practiced public defense with the Pierce County Department of Assigned Counsel. They also practiced criminal defense and Involuntary Treatment Act defense with the Law Office of Thomas E. Weaver. In addition, Jenn participated in the UW Tribal Defense Clinic and earned entry to the Tulalip Tribal Court.
After law school, Jenn became a member of the Washington State Bar Association. Jenn then worked as a public defender at the King County Department of Assigned Counsel (DPD) where they practiced criminal defense. After leaving DPD, Jenn worked as a freelance attorney, practicing criminal defense and Involuntary Treatment Act defense. Throughout their career, Jenn has built relationships with a multitude of entities, such as Let Everyone Advance with Dignity, Legal Intervention and Network of Care, forensic navigators, substance use disorder professionals, mental health professionals, social workers, mitigation specialists, investigators, victim advocates, corrections officers, police officers, judges, and lawyers of many practice areas. Jenn’s legal experience includes civil commitment defense, forced medication defense, misdemeanor criminal defense, felony criminal defense, federal criminal defense, tribal criminal defense, and appeals of these issues.
Jenn lives in Washington state with their partner, Justin. Jenn enjoys playing euphonium, decorative embroidery, tending to plants, and caring for their walking stick bugs. Jenn is a neurodivergent queer person who speaks English and is conversational in American Sign Language.
